The Leaky Roof Metaphor
By Pam Sherman | September 18, 2008
Welcome back to the Suburban Outlaw blog. Summer is winding down this week so I should say that my butt is a bit better and all my appliances are fixed but this week my roof brought a torrent of water into my house and the metaphor is not lost on me. Actually the metaphor isn’t about the leaky roof - it’s all about having a sense of humor in the face of adversity. When I pulled back the family room carpet to see the inches of water underneath I realized that, well, I had to laugh. The house is telling us something — feed me? fix me? love me? stay home more? And when the “guys” who came to remediate the damage (or calm the hysterical homeowner) saidm “oh my it’s in your bedroom too” and I started to laugh maniacally they couldn’t understand it - what am I going to do cry? Which is how I feel about what is happening in our financial markets these days. What are you going to do cry? Or remediate and laugh. I’m now old enough to say I remember when the last time this happened…I was out of law school a freshly minted attorney and our firm’s biggest client was a company called E.F. Hutton. Remember them? So I know my roof will be fixed and I know the market will adjust. I just know it. Or being an outlaw I could just go out and rob a bank…or I could laugh maniacally…I choose laughter every time.
