The Suburban Outlaw™

Write the Book

By Pam Sherman | March 18, 2009

We’ve just returned from Miami from the YPO-Global Leadership. An experience of a lifetime. The vision we set forth two years ago was absolutely achieved. We met people from all over the world — all over, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Indiana! Morrocco, Dubai, Mexico, Iowa. We fulfilled our dreams in so many ways. For me it was creating a Summit for Spouses/Guests celebrating all they do to support and provide perspective in this fast-paced life we live in. My resources included, Leslie Morgan Steiner, Author of the Mommy Wars, Dr. Cathy Greenberg, author of What Happy Women Know, and Richard and LInda Eyre, authors of Raising children with Values, oh and Me: talking about having an EDGE and what does that mean — to explore, dream, grow and excite — and I did all of those with this summit. We were able to share stories of Spouses in YPO that were amazing, our spouse award winner Amina Slaoui from Morrocco, and also quietly extraordinary, Nancy Kaney of Chicago (Delta Airlines Pilot mother of 2) and Thom Rhoads (member of a Spouse Forum in Maine). And then we surprised everyone with an interview that you could hear no where else but at the GLC, Jai Pausch the widow of author of the Last Lecture Randy Pausch agreed to come and speak about overcoming adversity and following your dreams. She is an inspiration to all who have suffered loss, acting with great dignity and grace. I am honored to have been able to interview her and share her story and to have her as a friend. So many dreams of mine have come true with this GLC: My business educating leaders about how to present themselves to the world has taken off. In addition, my book, The Suburban Outlaw is now available on Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble. All the spouses present received copies of the book, a compilation of my columns. In many ways, it’s the book I’ve written but still not the book I want to write. I want to write the book about how to change the world: one step at a time. I want to write the book about following your dreams: a little bit every day. And I want to write the book about how lucky we are to live in the world we live in at the time we live in: cosmic karma of the best kind. An outlaw with a heart — the mushy outlaw you can call me now…because I feel like my heart has grown three sizes too big! Leading this GLC has been a lesson in HOW TO WRITE YOUR OWN BOOK: DECIDE WHAT YOU WANT, WRITE YOUR OWN STORY AND IT WILL COME TRUE. Visit my story also on www.herrochester.com

    Hi Pam,

I loved your most recent article in Rochester Magazine - a real LOL’er - especially the part about your mother saying “Carl Bernstein WHO?” As I was reading your article aloud to my husband, I said “she’s a regular modern day Erma Bombeck and Art Buchwald and then it hit me - YOU NEED TO BE SYNDICATED!!!
