Celebrate Good Times…Come on?!
By Pam Sherman | May 19, 2009
After two years and what feels like 13 years of planning we have just finished celebrating my son’s Bar Mitzvah. It was all we could have hoped for and then some. Funny I thought after planning a conference for 2,000 people that a party for 180 would be a piece of cake. NOT. It’s all in the details. And yet the party isn’t what this is about. It’s about connection to our traditions, completion of a difficult task, connecting with family, sharing our life with them as we live it here in the farm field. OK enough with the meaningful portion: if the food had sucked that’s all they would have remembered. And so, after planning a conference for 2,000 people planning a party for 180 people is equally hard. My mother used to say you might as well have a dinner party for 20 as for 10 as it’s the same amount of work. She’s right. I’m not a visually creative person so this was hard. Color scheme? Centerpieces? How to make a sign-in board? We had our event at the world’s largest warehouse of art, ArtisanWorks (www.ArtisanWorks.net) And it’s in Rochester, New York! What I’ve learned in parties as in real estate it’s location location location. It’s also having amazing support, like Ellie Clapp, party planner extraordinaire - SHE is a visual person. I learned more about party planning from her grace under pressure than anything else. I also had my extraordinary friends, The Party Police to help me, because they know things that are not in any book. Thanks to my friends who knew calligraphy, where to get the fun stuff kids, and how to please everyone aged 4 to 94 in one weekend. I don’t care if you are celebrating a wedding, a communion, or a Quinceanera, surround yourself with good friends, good humor, and good vendors and THEN let the party begin!
In the meantime, my book publication date of June 1 is fast approaching. The cover has been finalized — toppling cosmos and all.
