The other night I was asked to be a celebrity bartender for a charity event for Ronald McDonald House.  Delighted with the invitation I showed up ready to serve.  Given my last column in Rochester Magazine where I extolled the drawbacks and benefits of celebrity, I use the term about myself very very loosely.  Apparently so did everyone at the bar, because no one knew who I was.  As I tried to explain that I write a column for Rochester Magazine, patrons who just wanted their drinks, looked at me with great confusion.  Thank goodness I was tending bar with actual bartenders who I think were more well-known than I (they were definitely cuter and provided better service).  When I was asked to serve a drink other than a beer, panic set in, and even when I served beer I ended up invariably opening the wrong bottle or getting the beer all over myself.  What was fun was meeting new people, selling copies of my book to support the charity (thank you!) and getting people to put up lots of tips to support a good cause.  It was when a bar brawl started over some girl in a yellow dress that I knew this Outlaw needed to leave the premises.  At least before the fight I got the fighter to put in a really big tip for Ronald McDonald House.  As I was leaving flashbulbs were popping for an actual celebrity, Buffalo Bill Thurman Thomas (and yes, now I know who he is).

Because of the upcoming book signing at Wegmans every time I go shopping for my family there are flyers of me all over the store.  It’s a little weird.  Just when I’m thinking, I’d like to put on an Outlaw mask, some wonderful person (one I don’t actually know) stops me in the aisle and says,  “it’s you!” And they say it like it’s a good thing, (or like it’s something Idon’t know).  So even though all the pictures are a little overwhleming, I remember, that as a writer I don’t often get to hear the sound of applause, the one I enjoyed so much as an actor   So… go ahead if you don’t know me and you like my work, stop me.  And if you don’t like my work, don’t stop me just buy the produce instead of the book (not for throwing for eating).  See you all on July 22nd at Wegmans 6-8 Remember to pick up your tickets at Pittsford wegmans!
