Talking Like bunnies…as seen on www.herrochester.com

Our kids are away at sleep-away camp, this is our third and final week - I know I know it’s a long time (not long enough some days, too long on others). I come from a family tradition of sleep away camps. I went for 7 weeks every summer. I tell people my parents were trying to give me a kibbutz experience, but really they just thought it was good for me. And if you’ve read Michael Eisner’s book about summer camp apparently it’s a leadership exercise I didn’t know I was experiencing. But I never thought about what my parents were doing while I was having fun at camp. So why do people keep asking my husband and I, “Are you doing it like bunnies?” Don’t they know we are 47 and married for 25 years. I’m not doing anything bunny-like - unless being a bunny means you get to take long walks together at the end of the day, you don’t have to eat dinner until 9:00 p.m., and you can actually finish a story or a sentence without hearing the plaintive wail of a child asking for ….anything. We actually find that the talking is the best part of this child respite. So, perhaps we will christen every room in the house…in conversation. Anyway, if we are “doing it” like bunnies…it’s nothing I would tell those people who ask or that I would BLOG ABOUT!!!! But during this alone time, I realize that while I love my husband dearly it is wonderful to re-connect and also realize….I LIKE HIM I REALLY LIKE HIM. So, maybe talking is the new sex like brown is the new black…and we are doing it like bunnies by reproducing our enjoyment of each other while the kids are having a blast at camp. And that’s a very productive summer vacation!

Pam - this is so true! Our kids were away for 5 weeks (they would have gone longer if we let them) and it went by SO FAST! I thought I had loads of time for adult dinners, date nights, cleaning out the garage, etc. Oh, no. Last week when I realized they’d be home in a few days, I went into a frenzy of movies, solo mall trips, cleaning out their closets, etc.
