Re-entry, Re-lapse, Re-covery

Also seen on www.herrochester.comA week ago, I packed with trepidation for a 6 day trip to a cottage in Mont Tremblant.  No t.v., hopefully no work, and little connectivity.  Upon arrival we found that the wireless worked and figured out the t.v. but we made a choice not to turn it on and to try and check e-mails every other day (OK every morning).  That left, hiking, biking, rafting, playing euchre, talking to each other, reading, kayaking and swimming in the lake outside our back door.  It was amazing.  Yesterday we drove home with a stop in the Thousand Islands to take a boat ride with our kids.  And then at 6:00 my husband said, “I need coffee.”  While I’m not that helpful on the driving, I do stay awake in solidarity and try and manage the rest of the car, so I had my first Starbucks in over a week.  When we arrived at home, after unpacking the whole car and the whole family, I found myself at 3:00 a.m. wide awake with my DVR control and out of control.   My eyes were popping out of my head from the late afternoon caffeine in my cleaned out system as I stared at 6 shows on the DVR wtih more to watch on HBO On Demand.  I was like an addict coming back from rehab and totally relapsing.   And that’s when I decided I would try and keep my vacation habits when I’m at home.  No coffee after 10 a.m., asleep by 10 p.m., no T.V. until 12:30 a.m. and definitely enjoying my family.  Vacation is a time to re-fresh and re-charge and in doing so to make changes in our life, but keeping those vacation habits are the first steps to re-entry and to re-covery.  Wish me luck.
