White Out Musings (as seen at www.herrochester.com)

Thursday’s storm gave me some perspective.  After begging my Mom, a spry young 79, to come to Rochester to celebrate Hanukah and her grand-daughter’s birthday.  I assured her there would be no snow, no worries, she would get in and get out.  And then the snow came.  I left one side of town with sunny skies to pick up my Mom at the airport and found myself driving into a white-out.  So, apparently, did the pilot, requiring a diversion to Syracuse.  While I drove white-knuckled back from the airport with no mother to show for my scary trip, my intrepid mom took a van from Syracuse to Rochester, had a pizza party provided by the crew, and managed to handle the ordeal with charm and grace.  As I celebrated my daughter’s birthday at the adorable La Tea Dah (tea and dress up what could be better), I thought about our family of strong women.  My daughter, 11,  a tweener, still a little girl wanting dolls and games to play with but smart and articulate and sweet, my mother, still working and traveling even after the passing of my Dad, and me, traveling the world to spread the message that having an EDGE is a good thing, I couldn’t be prouder to be my mother’s daughter or my daughter’s mother. And that is what is magical about holiday time - you get to step back and appreciate those around you - for being just who they are.
